Islam is the majority religion of the Gambia, with more than 90% of the population being Muslims.
Each year people in Gambia observe the holy month of Ramadan (the fasting month). During Ramadan, Muslims in The Gambia and around the world fast from sun-up to sun-down daily, not having anything to eat, drink, smoke or indulging in sexual relations.
The month ends with special festivities on the Eid al-Fitr (Day of Feasting) called Koriteh when families and friends truly rejoice for having completed the commandment of Allah by successful abstinence and by zikr (remembrance of Allah) at all times.
Ramadan, a month of sacrifice, compassion and forgiveness, is likely to begin on Thursday 18th June.
If you are visiting The Gambia in time of Ramadan, you will have a chance to experience month of fasting, giving, sharing and praying.
Ramadan Kareem to all Muslims around the world.
